From Prada to Galliano, 16-Year-Old Model Zoe Colivas on Her Debut Season

This season, the most highly anticipated events at Paris Fashion Week were two debuts: Raf Simons’s first ready-to-wear collection for Christian Dior CDI.FR +1.17% and Hedi Slimane’s first runway show under the label Saint Laurent.

But other less high profile beginnings have also been under way in the fashion world. For Zoe Colivas, this season marked the start of the 16-year-old’s international modeling career. The high school student from Toronto, Canada, has been on some of the most prestigious runways in Paris and Milan in the past couple of weeks. Her jobs so far have included shows for Prada, Cacharel, Rochas, John Galliano and Cedric Charlier.

As Colivas was exiting the backstage of John Galliano’s show, she talked to Speakeasy about her first steps on the hectic fashion scene.

Edited excerpts:

Speakeasy: What have been the highs and lows of the season for you so far?
Zoe Colivas: The high points are definitely when you’re in a show and, like, the anticipation…going out onto the runway. There’s not really any low points. I mean, you’re really busy so I guess being tired is kind of like a low point. But just like knowing what’s coming up means you always have excitement and something to look forward to.

What kind of accommodations do you have here?
I’m here by myself…I’m staying in a hotel with two other girls from my agency who are about my age so it’s really nice. One is from Toronto and the other one the U.S., so it’s very relatable, which is always a good thing.

How have you been getting around Paris to the shows?
By metro. There are days when you have 18 castings and you’re running around in the metro, so you get to see a lot of Paris and learn how to use the metro very well.

Shoes on the runway at John Galliano’s spring show

How was walking in the Galliano shoes?
Oh! Really comfortable!

They looked quite frightening…

I’ve walked in much more terrifying shoes… None of the shoes I’ve worn these past two weeks have been like scary at all.

Is that something that models really fear? Tripping?
My biggest fear is actually falling. But it doesn’t usually happen so I cross my fingers every time before I go out.

So where do you go from here?
I go home at the end of the week. I have to go back to school.
